Balanced Literacy

EMS has a goal of tailoring each student with a fair literacy program that develops his/her individual skills abilities. At EMS we are committed to providing students with meaningful activities to motivate them to become proficient readers and writers. By using various instructional techniques such as reading aloud, shared reading, guided reading, independent reading, shared writing, interactive writing, and independent writing we allow each student to independently move on to the next stage in their literacy development. Teachers follow up each student’s progress by recurrent assessment, monitoring and focus of instruction according to each student’s needs. In this way, those who have maintained a competent level further motivated and those whose skills need practice receive the attention they deserve.

The Elementary Science program focuses on allowing students to explore their world through research and inquiry-based discovery learning while integrating technology and writing. The students are taught to formulate questions, predict solutions, design experiments, and carry them out in the science lab. Students can use materials in the lab and resources from the internet either individually or in small groups to further improve their learning experience. They will then be assessed by lab reports, science projects and tests to properly achieve higher level thinking. When applicable, students will also be allowed to explore their world through appropriate field trips.

The Elementary Social Studies program presents students to world events, various cultures and significant global problems. Students explore our world and its regions while focusing on the following: geography, history, economics, sociology, and political science. This is often integrated with research through electronic resources, and reading and writing tasks. Discussion and field research are also a part of the curriculum to additionally expand students’ comprehension. EMS provides students with a wide range of reading materials that are implemented as part of a comprehensive literacy program. Skills developed in our literacy program include improving vocabulary and grammar, conceptual writing, and comprehensive responses to opposing viewpoints by speaking and listening. This may be put into action in an individual or a group setting. Students are also encouraged to continue reading inside and outside the class to maintain progress.

Physical Education provides age appropriate challenges for students and builds on previous years of skill development. Accentuation of rules in games and ball sports becomes a more prominent focus as well as fostering a sense of team strategy and a sense of good sportsmanship. Awareness of simple sport health and fitness is included. We aim to instill an overall fitness component in each student as they develop and take on more responsibility in their lives.

The students will be introduced to new concepts and techniques to add to their artistic intelligence.
